From Puppy Mill to Mostly Mutts to....Your Home?

5 yrs, 15 lbs. If you've heard about me before, I'm going to sound like a completely different dog! I spent my whole young life in a puppy mill.   There is no socialization in puppy mills so I'm a little behind with those skills.  Each day I learn more and get more comfortable being a house dog and a companion.  My teeth look like a 10 year old dogs teeth because they were damaged by years of chewing on metal cages.  My tongue permanently sticks out because of my bad teeth.  But the vets agree that I'm not older than 5 because my eyes are so young looking.  My new home MUST have other dogs because I enjoy the company of other dogs. I know there is someone out there who will provide me with a loving home and allow me to work at my pace. My foster mom is so excited about my improvements and you will be too.

Dog of the Week-Miss Maddie!

We love our Miss Maddie but are sad for her because she has been looking for her forever home since 2010. Her wonderful foster mom brings her to Petsmart adoptions every weekend but Maddie consistently gets overlooked.  Maddie is such a good girl and she would be great with a family who works during the day and wants to come home to a dog that hasn't destroyed the house.  Or, a retired couple who are home most of the day and would love the companionship of a four legged friend.  Maddie can live with other dogs, cats and older kids.  She has an old break in her tail so she is sensitive in that area (so no young children).  Let's all find her a home by spreading the word.  Mostly Mutts will rejoice!

Party with the Mutts!

Want to truly be a party animal?! We have just the idea for you!

Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue needs your help! We pride ourself  in pulling dogs from Animal Control whose time is running out and we've rescued several dogs that have required extremely expensive surgeries and treatments. Our budget has taken a serious hit and we are asking you to help us in a fun and FREE way (yes, you heard right, it won't cost you a dime!). Simply hold a dinner or cocktail party and ask your guests to donate $20-$25 to Mostly Mutts (we won't turn'em down if it's more :-). You reimburse yourself for food and drinks and donate the rest to Mostly Mutts. One of our volunteers had a Lasagna Party and raised $1,000 in one night!!! No matter where you are, you can party anywhere for a great cause! Need ideas? You can contact me here on FB or at meike.babel@gmail.com for more suggestions on this type of fundraiser or others. No matter how much you can contribute, you help Mostly Mutts save lives! Check out www.mostlymutts.org

Melody Victoria-What a Fighter!!

Most local Cobb county residents have by now heard the horrible story of animal abuse that recently occurred in May involving a beautiful pit bull mix puppy.  Good news and better news?  She is now with Mostly Mutts and is receiving lots of love and support!
Melody while at the vet

Melody the day she arrived at Mostly Mutts!

Melody was the victim of one of the worst cases of animal abuse.   She was placed in an oven where she suffered second degree burns to all four paws.  She has multiple burns to her head, tail, tummy, legs and nose.  Not only did she suffer physically and psychologically but she did not receive medical treatment for four days after her injuries occurred.  The doctors and techs at Cobb Emergency saved her life and even though she is not housed there any more, they see her every day for bandage changes.  They also picked up the tab from their stray fund.  (Donations can be made to Cobb Emergency Vet Clinic)
Melody is now with the director of Mostly Mutts and lives in her home along with six other dogs.  She is recovering very well and has started to play.  Even though she is out of immediate danger, she has a long recovery period ahead of her.  Once her wounds have healed, Mostly Mutts will start taking applications to find her a GREAT home.  She has some trust issues that will have to be worked with, and some puppy behaviors that will require training, but she is loving and will be your best friend.   She came to us named Melody but we've added Victoria because she was so “victorious” in overcoming her abusive owner.  He is now in jail on two felony charges…one for causing her injuries and one for not seeking medical attention.
Cases like this can be used for education purposes and maybe Melody Victoria can be the perfect teacher!

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt an Older Dog

Miss Mona-senior dog and best friend
As any rescue operation has discovered, senior dogs are often harder to adopt than the younger, cuter, more energetic puppies but they also have  many reasons why they would make great additions to any family.  In fact, this blogger adopted a senior dog from Mostly Mutts and has loved every minute of being her "mom."  A big thanks to one of our tireless volunteers for providing us with this blog post and ten reasons why you should considering adopting a senior dog.

  1. Older dogs are usually house trained, keeping you from having to go through the difficult stages of teaching manners and mopping up after accidents.
  2. Older dogs won't go through a teething period chewing on furniture, shoes or other items.
  3. Since older dogs have mellowed out a bit, they are often more focused and able to learn quickly.  Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?!
  4. They know what "no" means.
  5. They settle in much easier than younger dogs because they have learned from experience that they need to "go along to get along."
  6. Senior dogs are grateful for their new home and to be free to lay in their own bed without sharing space with lots of other dogs.  They are great at giving love and being a companion as a sign of their thankfulness.
  7. Ever heard the old adage "what you see is what you get?" Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality while puppies can still grow and end up quite different than what they seemed at first.
  8. Instant best friends-ready to hike, ride in the car or just sit in your lap and watch TV.
  9. They leave you time to yourself because they don't require the kind of demands on your time that pups do to be entertained, played with and constantly watched.
  10. Older dogs allow you to have a good nights sleep; they are more in tune with a schedule and most likely will not require nightly feedings, comforting or bathroom breaks.
Mostly Mutts has several senior dogs who are looking for their forever home.  Please consider them as your next pet.

Big Boys Need Loving!

Bert
Tucker
Today we are profiling two of our bigger boys who needs lots of love!  They may look all big and grouchy but they are both real sweethearts!

Tucker is an Aussie Shepard mix and weighs about fifty-four pounds.  He is an awesome, smart, fun, loving and curious dog but needs someone as an owner who is firm and consistent.  He is very trainable because this big furry goof ball is food motivated and he heels well when on a leash.  He is great with other dogs, as long as they don't try to "hump" him but he he has a best friend at the shelter, Cassie, and if you were to open your heart and home to both these dogs, Mostly Mutts will let you take them both for only one adoption fee.  Tucker was not well socialized when he was adopted out as a puppy so he really wants an owner this time who will love him, work with him and be committed.  He loves positive reinforcement and is a fun doggy!

Bert is seventy-five plus pounds of surprising gentleness!  He is a French Mastiff mix and needs a high amount of exercise.  Bert's previous owners loved him very much but had to give him up when they lost their home.  He is looking for someone who is a firm and experienced dog owner, who will throw balls and spend lots of time with him.  Bert loves belly rubs, long walks with his family and snuggling and sleeping with his new owners.  He is smart and well behaved and prefers a family with older kids.

If you can adopt one of these dogs or know someone Tucker and Bert would be perfect for, pass along our blog or contact us at MostlyMutts@comcast.net.

Meet Gracie, Louise and George

Above, Gracie; Center-Louise; Below, George

We've got three sweet little babies in at Mostly Mutts that everyone has fallen in love with!

At the top is Gracie who came in with George, shown at the bottom.  These two friends love to chase a ball and if you visit our Facebook page, you can see them on video having a grand old time with one of the volunteers, chasing and running around like little crazies! These two are small dogs estimated to be between ten and twelve years of age.  They came into Mostly Mutts in dire need of dental work and they are actually spending today at the doggy dentist, hopefully getting everything they need taken care of.

In the middle is precious Louise, a medium sized dog about three years old.  She seems to be house broken and has perfect cage manners.  She has had a rough life because she has never had a home.  She has been a stray who has had litter after litter of puppies.  She finally made it to animal control; thankfully it turned out that they called the good people at Mostly Mutts and Lousie was rescued!  She is very sweet and wags her tail quite a bit but it will take some acclimating to get her used to "family living."  Louise still has a long road ahead of her as she is heartworm positive and also has Juvenile Cataracts.  Her sight is slightly impaired but with surgery, she will be able to see much better.  She is great with other dogs and would love to have a playmate in her new home!
